To All ATC Member Company Executives:

This is a time sensitive matter which will impact the way your company handles PTO and Sick Leave and we need you to take immediate action.

Austin City Council Member Greg Casar has proposed a “Paid Sick Time” Resolution and the City of Austin's PSL stakeholder group will meet several times to discuss whether or how the City of Austin should mandate paid sick time for all public and private employers.

It is critical that you provide your company's time sensitive feedback to the City of Austin here at this link.  A Council Resolution, supported by Worker's Defense Project and something called WorkStrongAustin, (click here to download) may return to Austin City Council as early as December 2017.  Seven states and 30 localities have adopted a "Sick Time" Resolution (click here to view) but as of this writing we have no details on what might be proposed. Seven states adopted PSL—Arizona, California, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Oregon, Vermont and Washington—have adopted statewide paid-sick-leave laws, joining over 30 localities.  Studies here and here.

ATC believes that tech and innovation companies and all businesses need to have flexible workplace policies that meet the needs of both employers and employees. A one-size-fits-all government-mandated sick leave policy does not work for most tech companies, and will inhibit your ability to create an environment and PTO policy that works best for your business.

Call to Action: What can you do to have a say in this policy before it is finalized?

  1. Call or email your Council Member & Mayor before December 5th, and use the link above to provide feedback. If you live outside a City Council District, contact the Mayor’s office.
  2. Attend the community meetings listed below.
  3. Provide feedback via the City’s website (link above) before December 5th .
